About the challenge

Ride along the midnight sun in Iceland's fantastic terrain

  • September 2012

    First Golden Circle Challenge

At first it was just an idea, we wanted to create a competition that would take riders through the breathtaking scenery of south Iceland. Just under one hundred participants took to the roads in september that year.

  • August 2013

    Sophmore effort

Participation grew by a whopping 100%! Two hundred riders rode through the beautiful Icelandic country side. Hafsteinn Ægir Geirsson, Iceland's leading rider for almost a decade, won the male overall part and his fiancé Maria Ögn ,female rider of the year, won the ladies overall part.

  • July 2014

    Continuing success

Breaking attendance records again, around 400 riders took part in the competition. An up-and-coming rider, Ingvar Ómarsson, won the gents overall and María Ögn proved once again, that there wasn't a lady on the road who could challenge her. For the first time, the GC Challenge included international riders - and they have already booked their slots for 2015!

  • July 2015

    Record breaking attendance

This year we broke yet another record in attendance and had just over 700 riders. Elvar Örn Reynisson won the men's group and María Ögn Guðmundsdóttir showed us yet again who is the undisputed KIA Golden Circle Challenge Queen and took first place in the women's group.

  • July 9 2016

    Fantastic year!

A big change for this year was that María Ögn, the previous years' winner, stepped off the bike and took the helm of tournament management. A decision for this year was made to keep the attendance level under 800 for safety reasons and everything went off without a hitch with lots of smiling faces and exhausted racers.

    Star riders

The legendery Ryder Hesjedal, winner Giro D’Italia 2012, was our guest of honour at the this years KIA Golden Circle Challange. Yet again we had record participation in our race! The routes got new names, KIA Golden-circle, KIA Silver-circle and KIA bronze-circle. See you next year!
