Haines, AK to Skagway, AK

The route begins in the coastal temperate rainforest in Haines, Alaska. Haines has full services, including a bike shop. You’ll head north to Canada, crossing the border 39 miles (63 km) into the ride. As you climb out of Haines, you’ll find yourself above treeline and into the boreal forest surrounded by alpine lakes.
The Haines Highway meets the Alaska Canada Highway (ALCAN) at Haines Junction, YT after 148 miles (238 km). You’ll keep right towards Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon. Haines Junction has a number of options for lodging including hotels, hostels, and a campground / RV park as well as restaurants and a grocery store.
The next section of the ride stretches 106 miles (171 km) from Haines Junction to Whitehorse on the ALCAN. Expect more traffic on the ALCAN. Riders are encouraged to wear high vis and have front and rear lights. Whitehorse has full services including a bike shop.
Leaving Whitehorse, you’ll ride south on the ALCAN for 14 miles (23 km) until you reach the Carcross Cutoff. Take a right on the South Klondike Highway towards Carcross / Skagway. 33 miles (53 km) later, you’ll arrive in the small village of Carcross. There is a small grocery store in Carcross and a couple restaurants. Continuing South, Conrad Campground is 11 miles / 18 km further en route for a rest option.
You’ll ride through rolling hills as you pedal the 43 miles (70 km) along the shores of Lake Tutshi from Carcross to Fraser, BC and pass Canadian Customs (see the FAQ page for important information about border crossing). 8 miles (13 km) from Fraser, your final climb brings you to the top of White Pass. From the top of the pass, you’ll get to enjoy the exhilarating home stretch descending 3292 ft (1003 m) back down the sea level over the course of 15 miles (24 km). During the descent, you’ll stop to cross US Customs. Your final 3 easy miles (5 km) brings you into the heart of Skagway. Skagway has full services, including a bike shop.
